About Our NPORS Telehandler Training Course

Our NPORS telehandler training (telescopic handler, category N208) is designed to give operators the skills, knowledge and recognised certification they need to operate telehandlers safely and productively on UK construction and industrial sites. Whether your team is new to the machine or experienced operators needing a formal telehandler ticket, we tailor the course to their level.

Telescopic handlers are among the most versatile machines on site, but their reach, lifting capacity and load charts make correct training essential. The course covers safe operating techniques, load charts and stability, attachments, pre-use inspections, and the relevant health and safety legislation, so operators leave competent as well as certified.

On successful completion, operators receive an NPORS telehandler card recognised across the UK construction industry. Where the card is required for CSCS-carded sites, it can be issued with the CSCS logo, provided the operator has passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. For operators looking to progress further, a telehandler ticket also supports the route towards a plant operations NVQ.

How It Works

Telehandler Training at Your Site, on Your Machine

We deliver telehandler training and assessment at your own site, on the machine your operators actually use. No travel to a training centre, no unfamiliar kit, and no disruption to your programme. Our instructors cover Suffolk, East Anglia and the surrounding areas, and most operators complete the whole thing in a single day.

Training and Theory Test

We cover the NPORS N119 syllabus on site, including load charts, stability, attachments, legislation and site hazards, followed by the written theory test.

Practical Assessment

Your assessor observes the operator on their own telehandler, covering pre-use checks, travel, load handling, boom extension, stacking and hazard management.

Your Telehandler Ticket

Pass and the operator is issued with their NPORS N119 trained operator card, the telehandler ticket contractors ask to see on site. We handle all paperwork and submission to NPORS. The blue competent operator card follows later via a relevant NVQ.

Telehandler Training FAQs

What is a telehandler ticket?+

A telehandler ticket is the operator card you are issued after completing recognised telehandler training and passing the assessment. On our courses that is the NPORS N119 trained operator card, valid for five years. It is the card most principal contractors ask to see before allowing anyone to operate a telehandler on their site.

How long does telehandler training take?+

Most experienced operators complete the training, theory test and practical assessment in a single day. Novice operators need longer, usually across several days, depending on prior machine experience. We can assess more than one operator during the same site visit, which brings the cost per head down and keeps disruption to a minimum.

Do I need experience before booking telehandler training?+

No. We deliver training for novice operators as well as experienced operators who just need the assessment to get their card. Tell us where the operator is starting from when you enquire and we will scope the right course length. What matters at the end is demonstrable competence on the machine, not a prior certificate.

Is the NPORS telehandler ticket accepted on major projects?+

Yes. NPORS is nationally recognised and accepted by the large majority of principal contractors across the UK, including on major civil engineering and infrastructure projects. A small number of sites specify CPCS instead, so it is always worth checking the requirement with the principal contractor before booking.

What is the difference between the red and blue NPORS cards?+

Completing your telehandler training and assessment gets you the red trained operator card. The blue competent operator card is the next step and requires a relevant NVQ alongside the ticket. We deliver those NVQs too, so we can take an operator all the way through from red to blue.

Can I train on a rotating telehandler?+

The N119 course covers the standard telescopic handler. Rotating telehandlers turning through 360 degrees sit under a separate NPORS category, N006. If your operators are on rotating machines, say so when you enquire and we will confirm the right route.

Can you train several operators at once?+

Yes, and it works out considerably cheaper per operator. We can train and assess a group during a single site visit. Get in touch to discuss group rates and dates.

Is CITB grant funding available for telehandler training?+

Employers registered with the CITB levy may be eligible for grant funding towards the cost. We can advise on eligibility when you enquire. You will need your CITB levy registration number to claim.
