Course Content
Our NPORS-accredited training courses are designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely and competently with plant and machinery across a variety of settings. Whether you’re new to the industry or refreshing your qualifications, each course includes a blend of theory, hands-on training, and formal assessment. Below is an overview of what’s typically covered in a standard NPORS course, including how the training is structured and what you’ll need to do to achieve certification.
Classroom & Theory-Based Training
The course begins with a structured classroom session covering key areas such as roles and responsibilities, relevant health and safety legislation, pre-use checks, and operator safety. Learners are introduced to best practices for machine operation and risk reduction using the NPORS framework.
Practical Skills Training
Following the theory, candidates take part in supervised hands-on training, where they learn how to operate their chosen plant or machinery category safely and efficiently. This includes practical tasks like manoeuvring, load handling, shutdown procedures, and working in realistic site scenarios.
Preparation for Assessment
The final training phase focuses on refining skills and preparing for the practical and theory assessments. Trainers ensure that learners understand how to meet the NPORS standard and feel confident in their ability to demonstrate safe and competent operation during the test.
Assessment & Testing
All NPORS categories include a formal assessment made up of two parts: a multiple-question theory paper and a practical test. The theory test covers safety awareness, legal obligations, and operational knowledge. The practical test evaluates the learner’s ability to operate the plant or equipment safely and competently in line with industry expectations.
Certification & NPORS Card
On successful completion of the course and assessments, learners receive an official NPORS certificate. Most categories also offer the option to apply for an NPORS Operator Card, with or without the CSCS logo depending on the learner’s industry and Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test status. This card is valid for five years and recognised nationally as proof of competence.
