Thanks very much to Simon Diggory. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Simon was very thorough in his assessment and I would recommend Simon to new and upcoming slingers and crane supervisors. Once again thank you.
Great service — done two NVQs with All Star Safety over the last 6–12 months, Level 4 in lift supervision and Level 6 construction management. Both assessors Aiden and Simon were very helpful and made the process effortless, being on hand whenever I required support. Recommend this company for anyone thinking of doing their NVQs.
I completed my Level 3 Assessor qualification with Aidan from All Star Safety. Aidan demonstrated exceptional patience and simplified complex concepts. He was always willing to answer repetitive questions and ensured thorough understanding. I highly recommend him to anyone pursuing their NVQ qualification — you will be in capable hands.
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about construction training, NVQ assessments and our services.
A construction NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based qualification that assesses your skills in your actual job role. There are no exams — you're assessed by an approved assessor using real work activities, observations and professional discussions. NVQs are available from Level 2 to Level 7 and are widely recognised across the UK construction industry.
No. Construction NVQs are entirely workplace-based — there are no written exams or classroom tests. Your assessor visits you on site and evaluates your competence through observation, professional discussion and supporting evidence. This makes NVQs particularly suitable for experienced workers who want a recognised qualification without taking time off site.
CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) and NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) are both plant operator card schemes recognised on UK construction sites. CPCS is managed by CITB and is more widely specified on larger sites. Both require an NVQ for the competent operator (blue) card, and All Star Safety can support you with assessments for both schemes.
It varies by level and role, but most construction NVQs take between 3 and 12 months to complete. As the work is evidence-based and carried out alongside your normal job, there is no fixed classroom time. Your assessor will work around your schedule and gather evidence at a pace that suits you and your employer.
To upgrade from a red CPCS trained operator card to a blue CPCS competent operator card, you need to complete two things: pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, and complete the relevant plant operations NVQ (usually Level 2). All Star Safety can support you with the NVQ assessment and guide you through the full upgrade process.
All Star Safety offers a full range of construction training across Suffolk and East Anglia, including NVQ assessments (Level 2–7), NPORS plant operator training, IOSH Managing Safely, first aid at work courses, and health and safety consultancy. Based in Ipswich, we deliver training on-site at your premises or from our Ipswich centre.
