Understanding Our Assessment Methods

How Trade NVQs Are Assessed

There are no written exams and no classroom sessions. Trade NVQs are assessed entirely through your real day-to-day work on site. Your assessor visits you at your workplace, watches you carry out the tasks your qualification covers, and gathers evidence from a mix of observation, discussion, documentation, and witness statements from your supervisor and colleagues.

On-Site Observation

Your assessor visits your workplace and observes you carrying out real work tasks, confirming practical competence in the day-to-day activities of your trade.

Work-Based Evidence

Site reports, photographs, risk assessments and method statements from your live projects are collected as documentary evidence of your practical work.

Witness Testimony

Supervisors and colleagues who work alongside you provide signed statements confirming your competence, reliability and standard of workmanship on site.

Professional Discussion & Questioning

Your assessor asks targeted questions about trade procedures, safety regulations and problem-solving to confirm the underpinning knowledge behind your practical skills.

Common Questions

Trade NVQ FAQs

Everything tradespeople ask before starting a workplace-assessed NVQ. Still unsure? Our team is happy to talk it through.

Do I need experience to do a trade NVQ?
Yes. Trade NVQs are competence-based qualifications, which means you must be currently working in the trade you want to be assessed in. You need to be doing the day-to-day tasks the NVQ covers so your assessor can observe your work and gather evidence on site. There are no entry qualifications required beyond active workplace experience.
Do I need to sit exams for a trade NVQ?
No. Trade NVQs are assessed entirely on workplace evidence, so there are no written exams and no classroom attendance. Your assessor confirms your competence by observing you carrying out real work, reviewing work-based evidence, and asking questions about your trade.
What CSCS card do you get with a trade NVQ?
A Level 2 trade NVQ allows you to apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card. A Level 3 trade NVQ leads to the Gold Advanced Craft Card. The right level for you depends on your experience and the role you carry out on site.
How long does a trade NVQ take to complete?
Timescales vary depending on your trade, the level, and how readily evidence can be gathered on site. Because assessment fits around your normal working day, most candidates complete within a few months. The maximum period allowed is 12 months from registration for Level 2 and 3 qualifications.
Can I do an NVQ while working full-time?
Yes. Trade NVQs are designed to be completed in your normal workplace, around your working day. Your assessor works around your schedule, so there is no need to stop working or take time off to gain your qualification.
Do I have to attend a classroom for an NVQ?
No. There is no classroom learning as part of a trade NVQ. All assessment takes place on site, during your normal working day, with visits arranged around your schedule.
What evidence do I need to provide?
A mix of evidence gathered on site. Your assessor observes you carrying out real tasks, collects work-based evidence such as site reports, photographs and risk assessments, gathers witness testimonies from colleagues and supervisors, and asks targeted questions to confirm your knowledge.
