Novice learners will benefit from structured, tutor-led sessions and guided practice, while experienced operators can take a shortened version of the course if they meet the relevant criteria. All candidates will be assessed on their ability to operate the forklift safely across open and confined spaces, managing loads effectively, and complying with both site procedures and current legislation. On successful completion, you will be issued with an NPORS card or certificate demonstrating your competence.
Key Learning Outcomes
Understand the hazards of construction sites and the responsibilities of forklift operators
Extract and interpret safety-critical information from manufacturer manuals and other resources
Identify key components, controls, and warning systems of the industrial counterbalance forklift truck
Carry out thorough pre-use and post-use checks to manufacturer and legal requirements
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen in open and confined areas
Demonstrate and understand how to fit, adjust and or remove attachments
Understand loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation including positions of load on a vehicle
Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations while maintaining safe positioning of loads
Load and unload external transport safely including different types of vehicles / trailers
Transfer and discharge loads accurately and safely, including onto stockpiles or into excavations
Complete safe shutdown, isolation, and parking procedures at the end of operation
Perform safe manoeuvres in restricted spaces and during poor visibility
Carry out safety checks when loading and unloading in regards to weight of load, ground condition and overhead hazards
Position the machine to receive loads and work effectively with other plant operators
Safely mount and dismount the machine, understanding the correct procedure and observations
Apply environmental best practices, including minimising emissions and managing spillages
Assessment & Certification
At the end of the NPORS Industrial Counterbalance Forklift Truck course, all participants are required to complete a two-part assessment consisting of a multiple-question theory test and a practical skills evaluation. The theory test assesses knowledge of legislation, site safety, machine operation, and environmental responsibilities. The practical test requires candidates to demonstrate competence in conducting pre-use checks, stacking loads at varying heights, positioning for loading and unloading, and safely manouvering the machine under realistic site conditions. Both assessments must be successfully completed to achieve certification.
Certification Details
Upon passing the assessments, candidates will be awarded an official NPORS certificate confirming their competence as a industrial counterbalance forklift truck operator. This certificate is valid for five years. In addition, learners may choose to apply for the NPORS Operator Card — a recognised proof of qualification accepted on most UK construction sites. The NPORS card is wallet-sized, site-ready, and can include a CSCS logo if the Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test has been completed within the required timeframe. Refresher training is recommended before renewal to maintain safe and up-to-date working practices.
