About This Course

Ride-on Roller — NPORS Training & Assessment

The ride-on roller is essential for achieving proper compaction of surfaces, materials and sub-bases in construction and civil engineering projects. From road construction to groundworks, operating a roller safely and effectively requires understanding of compaction principles, machine controls, ground conditions and site hazards.

Our NPORS-accredited ride-on roller assessment covers both the theory and practical elements required to gain your NPORS Trained Operator Card. Assessment is carried out at your site, using your own equipment — no travel costs and no disruption to your work programme.

Delivered at Your Site We come to you — assessment carried out using your own ride-on roller on your construction site.
NPORS Accredited Nationally recognised qualification accepted by principal contractors, CPCS, CSCS and the wider construction industry.
CITB Grant Funding Available Employers registered with the CITB levy may be eligible for grant funding toward this assessment. Ask us for details.

Training and testing lead to an NPORS Trained Operator Card. To achieve a Blue Competent Operator Card, a relevant Plant Operations NVQ is required. Ask us about Plant Operations NVQs →

Who Is This Assessment For?

Operators holding a CPCS or NPORS Red Trained Operator Card who need to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator Card to continue working on sites that require it.
Experienced roller operators with no formal card who can demonstrate competence in the workplace and want to gain recognised certification.
Construction and civils workers who operate rollers for compaction work and need to formalise their competence to meet site requirements.
Employers looking to certify their plant operators to meet contractual requirements, comply with CDM regulations and satisfy principal contractor pre-qualification requirements.
Workers on Sizewell C or other major projects where competency card requirements must be met before going on site.
⚠️

Key Site Hazards for Roller Operations

Compaction Near Excavation Edges
Operating too close to excavations, trenches or drop-offs can cause the roller to overturn or slip into voids during compaction work.
Gradients and Cambers
Steep slopes and banked surfaces increase rollover risk, particularly when working across gradients or on unstable materials.
Reversing Hazards
Limited visibility when reversing can lead to collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, structures or other plant equipment on busy sites.
Ground Conditions
Soft, uneven or waterlogged ground affects compaction effectiveness and can cause the roller to become stuck or lose stability.
Assessment Content

What the NPORS Roller Assessment Covers

The assessment follows the NPORS N214 syllabus and covers both theoretical knowledge and practical operating skills. Our assessors work around your normal site operations wherever possible.

01Theory — Written Assessment
Roller types, configurations and compaction principles
Pre-use inspection and operator maintenance checks
Compaction requirements — density, passes and moisture content
Safe operation on gradients, cambers and soft ground
Exclusion zones and working near pedestrians and other plant
Vibration risks and HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome)
Relevant legislation — PUWER, CDM, Control of Vibration at Work Regs
Environmental considerations and noise management
02Practical — On-Site Assessment
Pre-operational checks including drum condition and fluid levels
Safe mounting, dismounting and operator controls familiarisation
Forward and reverse travel on level and sloping ground
Overlap compaction patterns on flat and cambered surfaces
Vibration mode — when to use and when to isolate
Working safely in proximity to excavation edges and kerbs
Response to simulated site hazards
Safe end of shift procedures and machine isolation

What You Need Before Assessment

Sufficient practical experience operating a ride-on roller in the workplace
A suitable ride-on roller available on site for the practical element
Valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
Current CPCS or NPORS Red Card if upgrading to Blue
CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test passed within the last 2 years (if applying for CPCS card)

What You Receive on Passing

NPORS Blue Operator Card — valid for 5 years
Ability to apply for CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card via CITB
Written confirmation of competence from All Star Safety
Recognition by principal contractors and SSIP pre-qualification schemes

How It Works

We Come to You — Assessment at Your Site

We assess operators on their own roller, on their own site. No travel to a training centre, no unfamiliar equipment, and no disruption to your compaction schedule. Our assessors cover Suffolk, East Anglia and surrounding areas.

01
Book Your Assessment

Call or enquire online. We'll confirm availability, agree a date and confirm any specific site or machine requirements before we attend.

02
Theory Assessment

Written test covering the NPORS N214 syllabus — roller knowledge, compaction principles, relevant legislation and site hazards. Completed on-site before the practical element.

03
Practical Assessment

Our assessor observes the operator working with the roller — pre-use checks, compaction patterns, slope work, vibration control and hazard management. Carried out on the operator's own machine.

04
Certification

On successful completion the operator receives their NPORS Blue Operator Card. We handle all paperwork and submission to NPORS on your behalf.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the assessment take?+
A single candidate assessment typically takes half a day covering both the written theory test and practical observation. Multiple operators can be assessed in a single site visit, which is more cost-effective for employers with several operators to certify.
Do I need prior formal training before the assessment?+
Not if you already have adequate practical experience operating a ride-on roller in a real working environment. If you're newer to the machine or want to refresh your knowledge before being assessed, we can advise on suitable training options. The key requirement is demonstrable competence.
Is the NPORS qualification accepted on major construction projects?+
Yes. NPORS is a nationally recognised scheme accepted by the vast majority of principal contractors, procurement frameworks and pre-qualification schemes across the UK. The NPORS Blue Operator Card is also accepted as competence evidence when applying for a CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card through CITB.
Can I book assessments for a team of operators?+
Yes — group assessments are welcome and often the most cost-effective approach. We can assess multiple roller operators during a single site visit. Contact us to discuss group pricing and availability.
What type of roller is needed for the assessment?+
We assess operators on their own ride-on roller on their own site. The machine needs to be in safe working condition and fit for operation. If you have multiple roller types on site, let us know when booking and we'll confirm which is most appropriate for the NPORS N214 assessment.
Is CITB grant funding available?+
Employers registered with the CITB levy may be eligible for grant funding toward this assessment. We can advise on eligibility when you enquire. Your employer's CITB levy registration number will be needed if you wish to claim funding.
