Whether you’re a novice entering the construction industry or an experienced operator looking to formalise your skills, this NPORS-accredited Excavator 360 course is designed to develop the practical knowledge and safe operating techniques needed to work confidently and competently on site.
Novice learners will benefit from structured, tutor-led sessions and guided practice, while experienced operators can take a shortened version of the course if they meet the relevant criteria. All candidates will be assessed on their ability to operate the excavator safely across varying terrain, attaching and removing buckets, and complying with both site procedures and current legislation. On successful completion, you will be issued with an NPORS card or certificate demonstrating your competence.
Key Learning Outcomes
Understand the hazards of construction sites and the responsibilities of excavator 360 operators
Extract and interpret safety-critical information from manufacturer manuals and other resources
Identify key components, controls, and warning systems of the excavator
Carry out thorough pre-use and post-use checks to manufacturer and legal requirements
Understand how to load/unload the excavator for transport, including safety precautions
Select, use, and maintain appropriate PPE and safety control equipment
Access, mount, and dismount the excavator safely, including during maintenance
Prepare the excavator for both site and public highway travel
Operate the excavator on various terrains, particularly on inclines and understand how different surfaces affect traction
Demonstrate how to attach and remove buckets using quick-hitch couplers safely
Complete safe shutdown, isolation, and parking procedures at the end of operation
Perform safe manoeuvres in restricted spaces and during poor visibility
Carry out safety checks at the work area and understand procedures and dangers of allowing others near a working machine
Configure and set-up the machine for excavating and loading duties and demonstrate selection of correct bucket to meet work specification
Place materials into transporting vehicles and hoppers while maintaining safety and stability of transporting vehicle during loading
Apply environmental best practices, including minimising emissions and managing spillages
Assessment & Certification
At the end of the NPORS Excavator 360 course, all participants are required to complete a two-part assessment consisting of a multiple-question theory test and a practical skills evaluation. The theory test assesses knowledge of legislation, site safety, machine operation, and environmental responsibilities. The practical test requires candidates to demonstrate competence in conducting pre-use checks, manoeuvring across varied terrain, setting up for excavations, and safely changing attachments under realistic site conditions. Both assessments must be successfully completed to achieve certification.
Certification Details
Upon passing the assessments, candidates will be awarded an official NPORS certificate confirming their competence as a excavator 360 operator. This certificate is valid for five years. In addition, learners may choose to apply for the NPORS Operator Card — a recognised proof of qualification accepted on most UK construction sites. The NPORS card is wallet-sized, site-ready, and can include a CSCS logo if the Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test has been completed within the required timeframe. Refresher training is recommended before renewal to maintain safe and up-to-date working practices.
