HSE Puts Spotlight on Construction Site Dust Management
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a renewed focus on dust control and respiratory health on construction sites, warning employers that poor management of airborne hazards such as silica, wood, and cement dust continues to result in preventable illness and non-compliance with UK safety law.
As reported by PBC Today, HSE inspectors are actively visiting sites to assess how well employers are managing these risks under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).
Why Dust Management Is a Priority
Inhalation of construction dust can lead to long-term health issues including silicosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and even lung cancer. HSE notes that many small and medium-sized contractors fail to implement adequate dust suppression systems, on-tool extraction, or effective respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
Under COSHH and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers are legally required to:
•Conduct thorough risk assessments
•Implement dust control measures (e.g. wet cutting, local exhaust ventilation)
•Provide appropriate RPE and training
•Monitor and record exposure levels where necessary
How This Links to Training and Competency
Site managers and supervisors have a legal and moral responsibility to manage dust risks. Qualifications such as the Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision and Level 6 NVQ in Health and Safety Practice equip professionals with the knowledge to:
•Recognise and assess dust-related risks
•Implement safe systems of work
•Monitor and enforce compliance on-site
•Communicate health risks effectively to workers
For employers, ensuring supervisors and operatives are NVQ-qualified demonstrates competency and supports a proactive approach to occupational health management.
