Raising the Bar for Competency and Leadership in UK Construction
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), in partnership with leading construction bodies, has launched a new Site Management Standards Framework aimed at improving competence, leadership, and safety culture across the UK construction industry. As reported by CIOB, the framework introduces a consistent benchmark for the skills and knowledge required of site managers, particularly those overseeing large or complex builds.
This initiative responds to growing industry and regulatory concerns, particularly under the Building Safety Act, about inconsistent supervisory standards and the lack of formalised training pathways for those managing site teams.
What the Framework Covers
The new standards outline expectations in the following areas:
-
Health, safety, and environmental management
-
Leadership and people management
-
Digital site management and record keeping
-
Programme and logistics planning
-
Compliance with UK legislation, including CDM 2015
It also encourages the use of recognised qualifications—such as NVQs—to support consistent competency development and workforce mobility.
