HSE Launches Surprise Construction Site Inspections: Are You Prepared?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a series of unannounced construction site inspections across the UK, with a focus on high-risk activities such as working at height, lifting operations, and plant safety. As reported by Construction Enquirer, these inspections are part of a renewed campaign to reduce avoidable incidents and check real-time compliance with legal duties under CDM 2015 and HASAWA 1974.

Initial reports suggest several sites have already received improvement and prohibition notices, largely due to failures in site supervision, planning of lifting operations, and inadequate workforce training.

What Are Inspectors Looking For?

During these visits, inspectors are focusing on whether employers can demonstrate:

  • Safe systems of work, particularly for high-risk tasks

  • Competent planning and supervision of lifting operations under LOLER 1998

  • That all workers hold valid CSCS, CPCS or NPORS cards

  • That workforce qualifications are backed by NVQs or recognised training

  • Site inductions, RAMS, and ongoing toolbox talks are up to date and relevant

The HSE has made it clear that safety documentation alone is not enoughโ€”they want to see competence in action.
