Upgrade to a CPCS Blue Card for Lifting Operations with All Star Safety

Whether you’re earning your first CPCS card or adding new categories as you progress through your career, you’ll need to complete the appropriate NVQ to upgrade your Red “Trained Operator” card to a Blue “Competent Operator” card. At All Star Safety, we’re here to guide you through the entire process with a team of industry-experienced assessors who make the transition straightforward and efficient.

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)

As of March 1, 2019, NOCN has taken over the ownership of the CPCS scheme, although the rules remain consistent. While you may notice some minor changes, the procedures for obtaining Red and Blue CPCS cards have stayed the same. Learn more about CPCS on the NOCN website.

Although there were some initial challenges following the transfer of management from CITB to NOCN, which affected the processing times for new Red CPCS cards and upgraded Blue CPCS cards, NOCN has worked to resolve these issues. You can read NOCN’s statement from early 2020 here.

The NVQ Process: What to Expect

1. Introduction and Documentation:

Your assessor will walk you through the NVQ requirements, including what evidence to collect. This typically involves providing documentation of your completed work to demonstrate your competence.

2. On-Site Assessment:

When you’re ready, your assessor will visit your site to observe you at work. There’s no need to change your routine—just carry out your job as usual, showcasing your skills in action.

3. Knowledge Demonstration and Professional Discussion:

You’ll answer a set of questions to prove your theoretical knowledge of the category. A recorded professional discussion will also give you the opportunity to highlight your experience, detailing the jobs you’ve completed.

4. Witness Testimony:

An expert witness—someone in a senior position who understands your role—will provide a testimony verifying your skills and experience. This ensures an additional layer of confirmation for your competence.

5. Final Review and Certification:

Once all evidence has been gathered, your assessor will sign off the NVQ and submit it to an independent verifier. As soon as verification is complete, we’ll send you your certificate.
