IOSH Highlights Urgent Need for Better Site Traffic Management Training

Following a major review of construction site incidents involving vehicles, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has called for stronger training standards in site traffic management. As reported by IOSH Magazine, poorly planned vehicle movements remain a leading cause of fatalities and serious injuries in the construction industry.

The IOSH review found that too often, traffic management plans were either not properly implemented or managed by staff lacking formal training, increasing the risk of collisions, overturns, and pedestrian injuries.

Why Site Traffic Management Needs Immediate Attention

Managing vehicle movements on construction sites requires more than barriers and signage—it demands:

  • Detailed traffic risk assessments and safe system planning

  • Competent supervision to enforce segregation and control

  • Training for all site staff, including plant operators, banksmen, and supervisors

  • Ongoing monitoring to adapt to changing site conditions

Failing to manage site traffic risks breaches duties under CDM 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

How NVQs Build Competence in Site Traffic Management

Formal qualifications help employers demonstrate that those planning and supervising traffic management are competent. Relevant NVQs include:

Holding these qualifications also supports CSCS, CPCS, or NPORS card applications, further proving competence to clients and regulators.
