What is NPORS Training & Certification?
The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) is a nationally recognised training and certification scheme designed to ensure workers across a wide range of industries operate safely and competently.
NPORS is suitable for both new entrants and experienced operatives, and offers flexible training solutions tailored to the needs of individuals and employers alike — helping businesses maintain compliance while boosting workforce competence.

What's Covered in an NPORS Course
Each course is structured around a blend of theory, hands-on training, and formal assessment to meet the NPORS standard. Here's what to expect from start to certification.
The course begins with a structured classroom session covering key areas including roles and responsibilities, relevant health and safety legislation, pre-use checks, and operator safety. Learners are introduced to best practices for machine operation and risk reduction using the NPORS framework.
Candidates take part in supervised hands-on training, learning how to operate their chosen plant or machinery category safely and efficiently. This includes practical tasks like manoeuvring, load handling, shutdown procedures, and working in realistic site scenarios.
The final training phase focuses on refining skills and preparing for the practical and theory assessments. Trainers ensure learners understand how to meet the NPORS standard and feel confident in their ability to demonstrate safe, competent operation during the test.
All NPORS categories include a formal assessment in two parts: a multiple-question theory paper covering safety awareness, legal obligations, and operational knowledge; and a practical test evaluating safe and competent operation in line with industry expectations.
On successful completion, learners receive an official NPORS certificate. Most categories also offer the option to apply for an NPORS Operator Card — with or without the CSCS logo depending on your industry and HS&E test status. The card is nationally recognised as proof of competence.
