Early Career Support Is Key to Construction Retention, Industry Report Finds

A new report published this week has highlighted the urgent need for better early career development in the construction industry to combat high turnover rates among new entrants. As reported by PBC Today, many young workers are leaving the industry within the first two years due to a lack of structured training, qualifications, and supervisory support.

The report, compiled by a cross-industry working group, stresses that investing in clear training pathways, such as NVQs, and offering mentorship or structured support for early career workers significantly improves long-term retention and workforce competency.

The Link Between Training and Retention

Key findings show that young workers are more likely to remain in construction when:

  • They are enrolled on a clear progression route, such as NVQs

  • Supervisors take an active role in mentoring and coaching

  • Their achievements are formally recognised through certifications and cards

  • They understand health and safety expectations and how to meet them

For employers, this means placing greater emphasis on entry-level NVQs, well-structured inductions, and providing visibility into career advancement options.
