Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations – Mobile Crane
Operating a mobile crane is a highly skilled profession that requires precision, focus, and a strong understanding of safety protocols. While some may underestimate the complexity of the role, experienced operators know that it demands extreme concentration, physical endurance, and the confidence to say no when a lift is unsafe.
The Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations – Mobile Crane is designed to formally recognise your competence and experience, enabling you to upgrade your CPCS or NPORS Red Trained Operator Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card and progress in your career.
Why Complete This NVQ?
✔ Demonstrate your expertise – The CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card or NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card is recognised across the construction industry as proof of competence.
✔ Hone your skills – Lifting operations require pinpoint accuracy, precise load control, and smooth coordination of movements.
✔ Gain deeper knowledge – Understanding crane systems, maintenance, and safe lifting procedures makes you a more competent and efficient operator.
✔ Improve job prospects & pay – Many large sites require a Blue Card as proof of competency, increasing access to better-paying jobs.

How is the NVQ Assessed?
Unlike traditional courses, this NVQ is work-based and assessed while you continue operating your crane. There are no exams—instead, you will be assessed on your real-world skills and knowledge through:
🔹 Workplace Evidence – Submit documentation such as lift plans, daily crane checks, and maintenance logs.
🔹 Direct Observations – An assessor may visit your site to observe you operating a mobile crane in real-world conditions.
🔹 Professional Discussions – Structured interviews to demonstrate your understanding of crane operations, safety procedures, and maintenance requirements.
🔹 Witness Testimonies – Statements from supervisors or site managers confirming your competence in crane operation.
📌 The NVQ is flexible and can typically be completed within 3 to 12 months, depending on your experience and evidence availability.
Upgrade to a Blue Competent Operator Card (CPCS or NPORS)
Once you complete your Level 2 NVQ in Mobile Crane Operations, you can apply for:
• CPCS A60 Mobile Crane Blue Competent Operator Card – Requires a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test taken within the last two years.
• NPORS-CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card – Also requires a valid CITB HS&E Test to meet industry standards.
