The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations – Cranes and Specialist Lifting (Crawler Crane) provides a formal, recognised route for experienced operators to gain their CPCS Blue Card. This NVQ confirms your ability to safely and competently operate a crawler crane above 10 tonnes on a live site.
This is a work-based qualification, meaning no classroom learning or exams – just evidence of your existing skills and competence in your role.
Who is This NVQ For?
This NVQ is ideal for experienced crawler crane operators looking to upgrade from a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card to a CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card. If you’re regularly lifting and placing loads using a tracked crawler crane in a construction environment, this qualification is designed for you.
What’s Involved?
You’ll be assessed against the national occupational standards for lifting operations, including:
•Preparing and operating a crawler crane to lift and transfer loads
•Conducting checks, setting up, and operating the crane in various site conditions
•Following site lift plans and ensuring compliance with safety regulations
•Shutting down, securing, and maintaining the equipment
•Communicating effectively with slinger/signallers and the lifting team
Evidence can be gathered on-site through observation or remotely via video, supported by discussion and documentation.
Duration
Completion times vary based on your availability and evidence. Most learners complete the NVQ in 1–3 months, with faster completion possible in some cases.
